Elevation Profile

Summit 3,143 m

A demanding single-day round trip through Hoang Lien National Park — dense jungle, bamboo, and rock to the summit. A park climbing permit and a licensed guide are mandatory. High energy cost, but the reward is standing on the Roof of Indochina entirely on foot.

Route by Section

Start
Sapa → Tram Ton gate
~15 km 40–50 min drive
⌄

Drive to the Tram Ton gate and start trekking after permit and guide checks.

The standard start is 06:00–07:00 — late starts risk finishing in the dark.
1
Gate → forest climb
~3 km 2–2.5 h
⌄

Muddy, rooty jungle uphill. Wetter and slipperier in the rainy season.

Leeches appear in the rainy season (May–Sep) — wear long pants and socks.
2
Forest → pre-summit rocks
~1.5 km 2–2.5 h
⌄

Past the treeline, rock and fog sections appear; felt temperature drops sharply.

Strong wind and cold at the top — put on your warm layers.
3
Summit
— 30 min stay
⌄

Confirm the 3,143 m marker and the summit tower on the Roof of Indochina.

You meet the cable-car visitors coming up from the summit station here.
Return
Descent
~5 km 3–4 h
⌄

Go back the same way; knees and ankles take a beating.

Do not overrun your deadline — night jungle walking is dangerous.

  • Warm jacket
  • 2 L water + trail food

Permits & guide

  • Park entry ~70k VND

Elevation Profile

Summit 3,143 m

Split the jungle climb over two days and sleep at a camp near the summit. The relaxed schedule gives higher success odds and comfort than the 1-day trek. Typically booked as a tour that includes guide, porters, permits, and meals.

Route by Section

Day 1
Tram Ton → mid camp
~4 km 4–5 h
⌄

Climb the jungle steadily to the intermediate camp (tents). Porters set up tents and cook.

In the rainy season check the groundsheet — camps can get damp.
Day 1 night
Camp overnight
— —
⌄

High-altitude nights are cold. Focus on insulation.

Nights can drop below 5°C — warm sleeping gear is essential.
Day 2
Camp → summit
~1 km 1.5–2 h
⌄

Climb the rocky summit section with a light pack; sunrise above the cloud sea on clear days.

Arriving before dawn beats the cable-car crowds to the marker.
Day 2
Descent (foot or cable car)
~5–6 km 3–5 h
⌄

Walk all the way down, or ride the cable car from the summit station back toward Sapa.

Foot descent if you have energy left; the cable car is a fine alternative.
