Route guide by section

Departure
Depart from Xueshan (Snow Mountain) Trailhead
0km Elevation approx. 2,140~2,180m

Start from the official trailhead of Xueshan (Snow Mountain). Although it's a high-altitude trailhead, the initial section is relatively good for finding your rhythm.

Since the altitude is already over 2,000m, pacing yourself in the early stages is crucial.
1
Trailhead → Chika Hut
Approx. 2km 1-1.5 hours

After passing Chikasan Shelter, which serves as the first overnight/rest stop, you enter the main alpine section. The trail is relatively clear.

It's good to take a short break to check your breathing and equipment condition.
2
Chika Hut → 369 Hut
Approx. 4.9km 4-5 hours

Continuing towards the observation deck and Nunmulgogae, the alpine feel gradually intensifies. A steady ascent continues until 369 Mountain Hut.

It is important not to overexert yourself, as your breathing may become rapid and your speed may drop sharply.
Arrival
369 Sanjang → Descend to trailhead
6.9km 2.5-4 hours

The long descent distance can easily lead to accumulated fatigue. It is safer to turn back early before the weather worsens.

This course alone provides a sufficient experience of the physical demands of the basic Xueshan (Snow Mountain) route.

Elevation Profile

The most common course for Xueshan (Snow Mountain) is a 1-night, 2-day itinerary that starts from the trailhead, passes through Chika Cabin and East Peak, stays overnight at 369 Cabin, and then ascends to the summit via the Black Forest. The one-way distance from the trailhead to the summit is 10.9km, with a round trip of 21.8km, and the total hiking time is usually estimated at 11-12 hours or more.

Route guide by section

1 day
Trailhead → 369 Hut
6.9-7.1km 6-8 hours

Pass Chika Hut, the observation deck, Nunmulgogae, and the vicinity of Xueshan East Peak to arrive at 369 Hut. The significant elevation gain on the first day makes a relaxed pace important.

After arriving at the hut, it is best to rest early for the next day's early morning hike.
2 days
369 Sanjang → Heuksamnim → Summit
4km 3.5-4.5 hours

After passing through the Heuksamnim (Black Forest) section, the trail continues to the summit along a cirque. Early morning departures are common, and the perceived difficulty is very high due to the altitude and temperature.

After Heuksamnim (Black Forest), the approach to the summit requires particular caution due to the alpine environment, strong winds, and dropping temperatures.
Arrival
Summit → 369 Shelter → Trailhead
10.9km 6~8 hours

Since a long descent remains after the summit, energy distribution is important. Knee fatigue significantly accumulates when re-passing Dongbong and Nunmulgogae.

Often, maintaining focus during the descent is more crucial than reaching the summit.

Elevation Profile

Xueshan Main Peak / Ridge Extension

Beyond the standard 1-night, 2-day course, Xueshan (Snow Mountain) also offers long-distance ridge traverse routes, with some Holy Ridge itineraries known to involve staying in unmanned cabins for 4-5 days. It is appropriate to consider these as advanced high-alpine traverses, completely different from the day-trip or 1-night, 2-day courses for general travelers.

Route guide by section

1
Access 369 Cabin via the main route
Day 1 6.9~7.1km

Access 369 Mountain Hut the same way as the standard Xueshan (Snow Mountain) course. The extended ridge traverse begins from there.

Reducing excessive energy expenditure from the first day will stabilize operations on subsequent ridge sections.
2
Ridge Extension after Xueshan Main Peak Ascent
After Day 2 Long distance

After the main peak, it connects to the Xueshan mountain range ridge, and depending on the course, it includes utilizing unmanned shelters and traversing long exposed ridges. Navigation and weather judgment skills are crucial.

Unlike a typical summit round trip, this section involves significantly greater structural risks and recovery difficulty.
Arrival
Return via Unmanned Hut
Day 3-5 Varies by Course

The return route is also not short, and a decision to retreat may be necessary depending on weather changes. Planning for food, water, and insulation equipment is much more important than for a regular course.

For safety, it is essential to approach this with an expedition-style plan.

Required Capabilities

  • High-altitude traverse experience
  • Self-sufficient equipment operation capability
  • Ability to Judge Retreat

Additional Gear

  • Reinforce Food Planning
  • Emergency insulation equipment
  • Navigation/Battery

Key Risks

  • Long-term weather exposure
  • Rescue access difficulty
  • Burden of Unmanned Hut Operation
