Departure
Depart from Huibang Information Center
Elevation 700m Punggi-eup, Yeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do

Start from the parking lot in front of the Huibang Information Center. Check the course at the information center before entering the mountain. Pay the entrance fee for Sobaeksan National Park, Huibangsa Temple area (Adults 1,600 won).

The Huibang Information Center parking lot is small. During peak season weekends, it fills up early. An early morning start is recommended. Use the restroom at the trail entrance before starting your hike.
1
Huibangpokpo Falls → Huibangsa Temple
Approx. 1.0km 30 min Elevation ↑100m
Difficulty

From Huibang Information Center, walk approximately 1km along the valley path to reach Huibangpokpo Waterfall (28m high). It is the largest waterfall in inland Gyeongsangbuk-do, displaying different appearances throughout the four seasons. Climb the wooden deck stairs next to the waterfall to arrive at Huibangsa Temple (founded in 643, the 12th year of Queen Seondeok of Silla).

Huibangpokpo Falls is famous for its spectacular frozen waterfall in winter. In summer, its refreshing spray makes it a popular spot to escape the heat.
2
Huibangsa Temple → Kkaldakgogae Pass
Approx. 0.8km 30 min Elevation ↑250m Steep Incline
Difficulty

From Huibangsa Temple to Kkaldakgogae Pass is the steepest section of this course. As its name suggests, derived from the gasping sound 'kkaldak kkaldak' as one runs out of breath, a steep incline continues. The wooden deck stairs are well-maintained, but this section is very physically demanding.

This section is the main challenge of the beginner course. Take plenty of breaks and ascend slowly. It can be especially slippery during descent.
3
Kkaldakgogae Pass → Yeonhwabong Peak Summit
Approx. 1.9km 50 min Gentle Ridge
Difficulty

Beyond Kkaldakgogae Pass, the gentle and wide ridge characteristic of Sobaeksan National Park unfolds. From the summit of Yeonhwabong Peak (1,394m) on a clear day, enjoy panoramic views stretching to Taebaeksan National Park, Woraksan National Park, and Songnisan National Park. The Sobaeksan National Park Observatory is located right next to it.

In spring (late May to early June), the Yeonhwabong Ridge transforms into a pink azalea tunnel. Yeonhwabong Peak Observatory is a great spot for azalea photos.
4
Yeonhwabong Peak → Descend to starting point
Approx. 3.7km 1 hr 20 min Descent
Difficulty

Descend to the starting point via the path you ascended: Kkaldakgogae Pass → Huibangsa Temple → Huibangpokpo Falls → Huibang Visitor Center. During the descent, you can rest briefly at Huibangpokpo Falls and enjoy the sound of the water.

Juknyeong Course Link Option: After an additional 3km from Yeonhwabong Peak to Je2yeonhwabong Peak, it is possible to descend to Juknyeong (requires 2 vehicles). Recommended for those with ample time.

From Juknyeong to Je2yeonhwabong Peak (1,357m), the section is relatively gentle due to a forest road. Enjoy panoramic views from the Je2yeonhwabong Peak observatory.

Pass the Sobaeksan Observatory and arrive at Yeonhwabong Peak (1,394m). It is a famous spot for spring azaleas and winter hoarfrost.

The Juknyeong~Je2yeonhwabong Peak section (4.2km) is relatively gentle, including a forest road. The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute's Sobaeksan Observatory is located directly below Yeonhwabong Peak.
2
Yeonhwabong Peak → Je1-Yeonhwabong Peak → Cheondongsamgeori
Approx. 2.8km 1 hr Azalea Tunnel Ridge
Difficulty

The approximately 300m section from Yeonhwabong Peak to Je1-Yeonhwabong Peak (1,386m) is a famous azalea tunnel. In late May, during the peak azalea season, experience a fantastic walk between azaleas on both sides. It is possible to descend from Cheondongsamgeori to Cheondong Parking Lot (vehicle required).

Je1-yeonhwabong Peak is a Blackyak BAC certification point. The ridge scenery where spring azaleas meet the sky is called 'Korea's Alps'.
3
Cheondongsamgeori → Birobong Peak
Approx. 1.4km 40 min Yew Tree Cluster Section
Difficulty

From Cheondongsamgeori, pass through the yew tree colony to Birobong Peak. After a sufficient meal and rest at the summit of Birobong Peak (1,439m), proceed towards Gukmangbong Peak. Beware of strong winds at the summit.

Take a short break at the Juniper Observation Post on Birobong Peak Summit. This is the halfway point of the traverse. Check your physical condition, weather, and time, then decide whether to proceed with the second half.

Gukmangbong Peak (legend says King Gongmin of Goryeo looked out from here, longing for the capital) is quieter than Birobong Peak and has more vibrant azaleas. Be sure to visit.
5
Neujeunmaegijae Pass → Eouigok Parking Lot Descent
Approx. 4.3km 1 hr 30 min Valley Descent
Difficulty

Descend from Neujeunmaegijae Pass towards Eouigok. After an initial 300m steep incline, it becomes a gentle valley path.

In winter, the frozen ice and icefalls of Eouigok Valley are a spectacular sight. The trek concludes at Eouigok Parking Lot (Saebat Amusement Park).
