The Taehambaek Traverse is a long-distance hike of approximately 23 km one way. It is recommended to start before 5 AM. Be sure to plan your transportation to Jeongamsa Temple (Gohan-eup, Jeongseon-gun), the final destination, in advance.

Ideally, one team parks their car at Jeongamsa Temple, then moves to Taebaek-si to start from Danggol. Alternatively, pre-book a taxi in Gohan-eup.
Solo hiking is strictly prohibited. Rescue is difficult in case of an emergency on long-distance Baekdudaegan sections. Team hiking with 2 or more people is mandatory.
1
Danggol Plaza → Munsubong Peak → Cheonjedan Altar (Yeongbong Peak)
Approx. 5.5km 2h 30min Intermediate Section
Difficulty

Same as the first half of the intermediate course. From Danggol, you reach Cheonjedan via Somunsubong, Munsubong, and Buseobong. Fully enjoy the yew tree community and ridge scenery.

Cheonjedan → Janggunbong Peak → Yuilsa Temple Junction → Sagillyeong Pass
Approx. 5.5km 2h 30min Baekdudaegan Ridge
Difficulty

From Cheonjedan, pass Janggunbong Peak and follow the northern ridge. At the Yuilsa Temple junction, do not descend towards Yuilsa Temple but continue straight (towards Baekdudaegan Ridge) to Sagillyeong Pass. This long ridge descent section will consume energy.

Caution: Do not make a wrong turn at Yuilsa Temple Junction! GPS or signpost confirmation is essential. Proceeding towards Sagillyeong Pass is necessary to connect to Hambaeksan Mountain.
3
Sagillyeong Pass → Eundaebong Peak → Manhangjae Pass
Approx. 5.0km 2h Baekdudaegan Core Section
Difficulty

This is a key section extending from Sagillyeong Pass (Baekdudaegan saddle) over Eundaebong Peak (1,442m) to Manhangjae Pass (1,330m). The wildflower colonies around Manhangjae Pass, the highest paved road in Korea, are a spectacular sight in July-August. Rest sufficiently after arriving at Manhangjae Pass.

Convenience store and restrooms available at Manhangjae Pass. Replenish energy before the final Hambaeksan section. If you reach your physical limit here, you can exit at Manhangjae Pass.
4
Manhangjae Pass → Hambaeksan Peak → Junghambaeksan → Jeongamsa Temple
Approx. 7.0km 3h Final Section
Difficulty

From Manhangjae Pass, reach the summit of Hambaeksan (1,573m) after a 30-minute steep uphill climb. Hambaeksan is the second highest peak in Korea based on regular hiking trails.

From the summit, descend past Junghambaeksan towards Jeongamsa Temple. Jeongamsa Temple (founded in 646 by Jajang Yulsa) is one of the oldest historical temples in Korea.

After arriving at Jeongamsa Temple, you can have a meal in Gohan-eup town. Return via pre-booked transportation. Be sure to visit Sumano Pagoda (National Treasure) within Jeongamsa Temple.
