On the first day, you will walk a steady uphill to reach Paiyun Lodge. After checking into the lodge, it is crucial to rest and allow ample time for altitude acclimatization.
It is common to start early in the morning to reach the summit around sunrise. Although the distance itself is short, it feels much harder as you start at an altitude of over 3,400m.
Return from the summit to the lodge, re-equip, and then proceed with the long descent. The descent time is long and puts a heavy strain on the knees, so you must maintain focus until the end.

Some experienced hikers ascend and descend Yushan (Jade Mountain) in a single day. In actual cases, they depart from Tataka at dawn, cover 8.5km to Paiyun Lodge, and then another 2.4km to the summit, all within the same day. Considering the distance and altitude, officially a 2-day, 1-night trip is standard, but a single-day course is an advanced option only to be considered if you have sufficient physical fitness, high-altitude acclimatization, and operational experience.

After moving from Shangdongpu parking lot or a nearby base, depart from Tataka very early. Traveling in the dark before sunrise and adapting to low temperatures are essential.
Experienced hikers can reach the cabin relatively quickly, but it expends much more energy than a typical hike. After this, only a short rest may be possible before tackling the summit.
This is the critical point of the long day hike. After reaching the summit, a long descent still awaits, so you must quickly recover your body temperature and stamina at the peak.
Even after the summit, more than half of the hike effectively remains. Concentration during descent, knee stamina, and time management are all crucial.
