Elevation Profile

Low's Peak 4,095 m

The standard summit climb of UNESCO-listed Kinabalu. Day 1 climbs from Timpohon Gate to Laban Rata (3,270 m) for the night; Day 2 ascends in the dark to Low's Peak (4,095 m) for sunrise, then descends. A 135-climber daily quota and a mandatory guide mean booking months ahead.

Route by Section

Day 1
Timpohon Gate → Laban Rata
~6 km 4–6 h
⌄

Staircase forest paths give way to shrub and rock. Overnight at Laban Rata (3,270 m).

Altitude gain is fast — slow down and hydrate if headache or nausea appears.

Ferrata traverse

Attach the world's highest via ferrata (fixed-rope climbing route) to your descent after the summit push — traversing granite cliffs clipped to safety cables with a professional instructor. Separate booking and fees are required, reserved months ahead together with the summit climb.

Route by Section

Start
Summit climb (shared)
— Pre-dawn
⌄

Climb to Low's Peak on the standard 2-day schedule. Ferrata participants coordinate timing with the instructor.

The ferrata is energy-intensive — keep summit time short.
1
Via ferrata entry
— 30 min
⌄

At the entry point below the summit, harnesses and carabiners are checked and the instructor gives a safety briefing.

Faulty gear fitting is grounds for immediate cancellation — listen closely.
2
Granite traverse
~0.5 km 2–3 h
⌄

Move along fixed ropes across cliff traverses and drops — the highest via ferrata on Earth.

Severe vertigo? A short-course exit exists partway through.
Return
Back to Laban Rata, then down
~8.7 km 4–6 h
⌄

Return to Laban Rata for breakfast, then descend to Timpohon.

Legs will be tired after the ferrata — poles are essential for the descent.

  • Insulated clothing
  • Extra water & trail food

Reservation

  • Separate ferrata booking & fee
  • Combined with summit booking
  • Reserve months ahead
